Activities in and around Gull Cottage:
Swimming: Our private beach is down a short hill, close to the house. The water is clear and refreshing and warm enough for most people from mid-June through mid-September. The sand is white and clean—perfect for sun bathing or sand castles. Beach chairs and toys are provided for your convenience. Close by, there is also a sandy sluiceway between the ponds, where children like to play and watch the baby herring swim.
On Foot or Wheels: Numerous dirt roads weave throughout the woods of the Cape Cod National Seashore, perfect for hiking, walking, and jogging. Our favorite trail goes past six ponds and ends up at the ocean in about half an hour. If you like to bike, the extensive Seashore bike path is also nearby.
Fishing: Trout fishing by wading or boat is excellent, particularly in the spring and fall. There is also ice fishing in the winter, depending on temperatures. Gull is stocked with trout. Bass, perch, pickerel and sunfish are indigenous to the other ponds as well.
Boating and Sailing: Fishing, bird watching, and exploring by boat are favorite pastimes, especially as there are four ponds that connect by sluice or brook. We have a canoe and a sunfish for your use, but our beach is also a perfect place to launch your own kayaks. Boat rentals are also available in town.
Indoors: When the weather is bad, there is still lots to do. There are plenty of books in your room, and also numerous games and puzzles, in your room or the main house.
Area Highlights and Other Activities:
Ocean Swimming and Beach Combing: The ocean is 5 minutes away by car or a 30 minute walk through the woods. Spectacular white sand beach and high dunes extend 40 miles from Provincetown to Chatham.
Surfing: White Crest, the surfer’s beach on the ocean, is nearby and can have excellent waves depending on tides, currents, and wind conditions . Bring your board and other equipment, or they can be rented locally.
Whale Watching: This is one of the Cape’s most exciting events! Stellwagen Bank, 10 miles North of Provincetown, is a prime area for seeing finback, humpback, and minke whales, as well as occasional dolphins and sea birds. Getting to the boats takes only 20 minutes by car, and the trips take about three hours.
