Common Rooms

The Porch: In good weather, the porch is the favorite spot, with expansive screening for allowing fresh breezes without bugs. With gorgeous views of Higgins Pond, it is the best place for socializing, eating and watching the hummingbird “wars” from a foot away. In the summer, breakfast is served here, except in inclement weather.

The “Keeping” Room: Today, this would be called the family room. Dominated by a large central fireplace once used for heat and cooking and a beehive oven for baking, the keeping room was the hub of the household. Furnished now with family portraits and antiques, this room is perfect for conversation or reading, lounging, and relaxing.

The Dining Alcove: Once the dark and isolated “borning room,” where women gave birth, the alcove now adjoins the keeping room and has a picture window with beautiful views of both ponds. In inclement weather or anytime, it is the ideal spot for eating and bird watching, with a bird bath and several feeders in full view. Breakfast is served here, when not on the porch.

The Front Parlor: This fireplaced room used to be the fanciest with its detailed moldings and the best furniture. It was reserved for special occasions only, such as weddings and funerals and visits from the pastor. It is now a study/library and a great place for writing, playing games, or doing puzzles.

The Kitchen/Pantry: Delicious food emanates from this small space. Handsome wood counters salvaged from a maple tree which fell victim to Hurricane Bob in 1991 highlight the area. Open shelves displaying blue china and other dishes, cabinets mostly from the 1940’s, and an antique sink complete the picture.
